Many benefits are offered over a standard open differential including maximising traction and minimizing wheelspin. Torque steer and driveline wrecking wheel hop/tire snatch are minimized. Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip differential, the Quaife 02J relies on gears rather than clutch plates for its operation. That means it is much smoother in operation and maintenance-free over time. No periodic rebuilds are required to keep performance consistent.
These differentials never lock harshly with a set pre-load of wheel slip across the driven axle, like a plate-type LSD. Rather, the Quaife LSD automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree, and never locks. Rallyists and drivers of rough tracks should remember that some traction is required at both tires in order for a helical-type diff to function. If one tire is in mid-air or on glare ice (for example), then this unit will operate like the original open differential. For applications where this is likely (e.g. rally or ice racing), USRT recommends a a plate-type differential.
